Keratin Treatment on Glossy Brown Hair | Categories:,

One of the best kept sleekening secrets, keratin hair treatments have been used by celebrities across the UK, the US and internationally, from Meghan Markle to Sarah Jessica Parker to Khloe Kardashian. With our salon reopening after months of restrictions, it is the perfect time to book yourself in for the holiday season and achieve that gorgeous sleek hair look. If you’re overwhelmed or confused by online misinformation about this smoothing procedure, take a look at our answers to the most commonly asked questions.

What is keratin treatment for hair?

You may have come across or heard of keratin as an essential protein that is found in the hair, skin and nails. But what you may not know is that keratin makes up to 91% of your hair and contains sixteen different amino acids. Therefore, if your natural keratin levels are low, then your hair may look frizzy, dehydrated or even damaged.

This is where the keratin hair treatment comes in. This treatment, which is sometimes referred to as a brazilian blow dry, is a man-made chemical process that is used by hairdressers to form a coating over frizzy or naturally curly hair to smooth and add shine. It is incredibly effective and, if cared for properly (more on this later), results can last up to four to five months.

If your hair is curly, wavy, frizzy or unruly, then you are an ideal candidate for a keratin treatment at our salon. Not only does the formula straighten the hair, but it helps to rebuild and strengthen. Post-treatment, your hair should be easier to manage and quicker to style.

Does a keratin hair treatment damage hair?

As far as hair treatments go, our formaldehyde-free keratin treatment is one of the least damaging and should have no negative effects on the hair. In fact, it offers increased hydration levels and works wonders to improve the condition of dry hair.

This is because the treatment injects porous areas of the hair follicles with an essential hair protein, meaning that it will leave your hair looking healthier because it actually is. The treatment also offers repair and strengthening results.

Remember that, unlike straightening chemical relaxers, keratin treatments are temporary and do not alter the chemical composition of your hair. Over time, the keratin will break down and the hair will return to its natural state, at which point you can revisit us for a follow-up treatment.

How long is the treatment?

During your appointment, we will start off with a gentle clarifying shampoo to prep the hair, such as Aveda’s Natural Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo. This is essential before applying the keratin treatment, which we will comb through each part of the hair in segments individually and then leave on to work for up to 60 minutes.

We will then lightly rinse off the treatment to remove any excess product, before roughly blow-drying and straightening the product into the hair. A flat iron is used to straighten the hair in small sections (and up to ten times depending on the coarseness of your hair). We do this to close down the hair cuticles and lock in the keratin.

After a small waiting time, we will wash out the product and style as desired, leaving you with a sleek, glossy and lightweight result. Depending on your hair texture and how much hair you have, the entire keratin hair treatment duration should last no more than two to four hours.

How do you take care of your hair after keratin treatment?

Keratin treated hair should be left a day or two before washing to allow the treatment to settle.

With the right aftercare treatments, products and tools, you should be able to enhance your results post-treatment. So, if you really want your treatment with us to last effectively, we recommend investing in the following products which you can buy online or in-person at our salon:

  1. Aveda Smooth Infusion Shampoo & Conditioner

When it comes to washing your hair, avoid sulphate-free and sodium chloride shampoos and conditioners because keratin can be broken down by sulphates in shampoo. This plant infused blend will gently cleanse and create a smooth new surface on your hair.

  1. Aveda Smooth Infusion Smoothing Hair Masque

We recommend implementing a hydrating hair mask into your routine to keep your hair in tip-top silky condition. This mask will deep condition your hair to reduce unwanted volume, while sealing in moisture and locking out frizz.

  1. Aveda Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-in Treatment

For a more intense at home treatment, a strengthening leave-in product is highly recommended as it will rebuild broken bonds at the core and protect the hair. This plant infused formula from Aveda helps hair to feel stronger.
